Baptism

We love welcoming babies, children and adults to our church family through baptism.

Baptism at Cooksville United Church

Baptism is one of the most significant moments in the life of a Christian. It symbolizes a public declaration of faith, a new beginning in Christ, and the joining of the community of believers. At Cooksville United Church, we are honored to walk alongside you in this important spiritual step. Whether you are considering baptism for yourself or for your child, we are here to help guide and support you in this beautiful journey of faith.

Why Baptism?

Baptism is an outward sign of the inward change that has taken place in a person’s life. It is a symbol of God’s grace and the washing away of sins, marking a person’s entrance into the Christian community. Through baptism, individuals:

  • Publicly profess their faith in Jesus Christ
  • Receive the Holy Spirit
  • Enter into a lifelong journey of faith and discipleship
  • Become part of the family of believers in the church

In the Bible, baptism is seen as an essential act of obedience to Christ, as He Himself was baptized and commanded His followers to do the same (Matthew 28:19-20).

Types of Baptisms We Offer

  • Infant Baptism: For parents who wish to have their child baptized, this sacrament symbolizes the community’s commitment to help raise the child in the Christian faith.
  • Adult Baptism: For those who have come to faith later in life, adult baptism is a powerful and personal expression of faith in Jesus Christ.

Preparing for Baptism

Baptism is an important spiritual milestone, and we are here to help you prepare:

  1. Pre-Baptism Counseling: Before baptism, we offer counseling or a class to help you understand the significance of the sacrament and its place in the Christian faith.

  2. Personal Testimony (For Adult Baptisms): If you are being baptized as an adult, we encourage you to share your personal testimony about your faith journey and what baptism means to you.

  3. Family & Community Involvement: Baptism is a community event, and we encourage family and friends to join in the celebration and commit to supporting you in your Christian walk.

Baptism Ceremony Details

Our baptism ceremonies are special and are held during regular worship services. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Service Format: The ceremony will include a time of prayer, scripture readings, and the actual baptism, where the individual is either sprinkled with water.
  • Celebration: After the baptism, we celebrate this new life in Christ with the congregation, offering prayers of thanksgiving and support.

Baptism for Children

Baptizing your child is a beautiful way to dedicate them to the Lord and the faith community. It signifies that God’s love and grace are extended to your child, even before they can fully understand or make their own decisions. During the baptism of a child, parents and the congregation commit to supporting the child’s spiritual growth.

  • Godparents: We encourage parents to select godparents who will help nurture the child’s faith throughout their life.
  • Infant Baptism Preparation: We ask parents to attend a brief class to help them understand the significance of baptism and what it means for their family.

Baptism FAQs

  • Do I have to be a member of the church to be baptized here? While we welcome individuals from all backgrounds, we do ask that you attend a baptism class and be connected with our church community before scheduling your baptism.

  • Can I be baptized if I have already been baptized at another church? We recognize all valid baptisms, but if you have questions about re-baptism, we encourage you to speak with our Minister to discuss your personal situation.

  • What do I need to bring for my baptism? For child baptisms, please bring your child’s full name, and if applicable, the names of the godparents. For adult baptisms, no special preparation is needed.

  • Is baptism required for church membership? Baptism is not required for membership, but we encourage it as an important step in your faith journey. If you have any questions about church membership, we would be happy to guide you.

Baptisms are scheduled based on demand. Please contact the Church Office to arrange to speak to Rev. Brian Vickers, to find out more information.
